Posted by Steve Rubel On average I travel for business about seven to 15 days a month. Sometimes it can get a bit nuts, but I love it - I never get bored. This is one of those weeks. I will literally be in the clouds all week both virtually and physically. I am starting my journey today in Toronto. Tomorrow I am speaking at the MIXX conference and will also participate in staff, client,...

There are tons of great apps and services out there that can help designers and developers do their job better. In fact, and perhaps you can agree with me here, there are too many and a lot of them do pretty much the same thing. The following are 3 killer design and development apps that I have found to be amazing and that have helped me do my job better. In fact, I’m not sure how I could...

Allow me to lay a scene: It’s 7:00 am. The kids need to be fed and bundled off to school. The toast is burning. The cat just knocked a pile of papers off the counter, and you’ve got a big presentation to give in an hour and you haven’t even begun to prepare. Okay, so that bit of fiction certainly doesn’t describe all of us, but there is a universal truth to it: our lives are busy and hectic and...

The idea that best way to learn a subject is to teach it may be the bane of undergraduates left to the mercies of graduate teaching assistants, but it’s remarkably true. In medical school, the cliché “See one; do one; teach one” has become a dominant pedagogical principle. In fact, George Bernard Shaw’s notorious anti-educational quip gets flipped &#8212 instead of...

If you’re hankering for some nostalgic video game action this weekend, you’re in luck. Check out this selection, spanning the last 20 years or so, of commercial games released as freeware. There are a variety of web sites that catalog old games—the MakeUseOf link catalogs a number of them—but RemainInPlay takes a unique angle. Rather than include any free games from past, they only...

Your netbook’s screen is tiny and processor less than mighty, so you want to maximize the web page viewing area without any performance-killing Firefox extensions. Here’s how to consolidate Firefox 3.5’s chrome for your Windows or Linux-based netbook. Even if you don’t have a netbook, these modifications still work if you want to consolidate Firefox 3.5’s chrome on...

Have you seen the new MinistryCSS.com site? A collaboration between ChurchMedia and ChurchRelevance, it’s a gallery of great looking ministry sites. Get some inspiration, get some ideas, and then go help your local church look more awesome online. You can also rate, review, share, and comment on the designs. My only concern (and this is a concern for all gallery sites, not just this one) is...

Love this idea first found by Collide Magazine which shows Park Community Church hooking up visitors to their website with alternative locations to worship. They don’t have to but they’re telling their visitors that Church and God and your spiritual walk is so much bigger than just them. I love this. I think you should too. Sponsored By: Advertise Here

The world doesn’t need another leadership theory. On Amazon, there are 480,881 books today that have to do with leaders as the topic. If you ask 30 leadership development experts to define leadership, you get 31 different answers. No wonder we’re confused. This is a problem when trying to develop effective leaders- everyone has a different opinion and there’s no right answer....

Creating your own products used to mean a significant up-front investment — purchasing a minimum amount of the product as dictated by the manufacturer, paying for warehousing, packaging, point-of-sale systems, and other overhead costs. And that was all before you even took a single order! Thankfully, for many types of products, print-on-demand technologies have made it possible for anyone to...

Firefox/Chrome/Opera/IE: I’ve never found Google Calendar to be particularly unattractive—until I compared it to the sleek, clean look of Google Calendar with the Helvetical user script, that is. Helvetical has a very similar design aesthetic to previously mentioned Helvetireader, a Helvetica-themed Google Reader customization. It’s easy on the eyes and drops out a lot of the clutter...

For much of the world, it’s that special time of the year when students head back to school. The good news for students is that even though that means waking up early and doing homework, there are a number of web-based and social tools to help you get through the school year. From staying organized to improving study habits to making sure you reference your research sources properly, the web can...
